Engineering of the Future

First of all this being my first post ever, I want to welcome those of you who have stumbled upon my blog. I wanted to start this blog to discuss the advancement of the engineering field and how different technologies such as the web are now beginning to shape the future of this field forever. First of all let me give you a little background about me.

I graduated almost a year ago with a degree in Civil Engineering. Civil engineering is a huge field that encompasses so many areas, such as transportation engineering, environmental engineering, structural engineering, etc. While in school I had the honor of interning with a state-of-the-art structural engineering firm, Engineering Express. I continued to work for this company after I graduated until present.

This company has shown me how out of date the engineering field is and how much potential it has. As most people probably perceive, engineering has a lot to do with math and calculations, and their right. And with the advancement of computers you would think that this field has evolved tremendously. The truth is there are some computer programs and software out there that help engineers perform their calculations, however there is much room for improvement.

The problem is that many engineering do not like change. There are still many engineers that prepare engineering drawings by hand instead of using a program like AutoCAD. These same engineers still perform many of their calculations by hand, which is very tedious and slow. These engineers are the reason that the engineering field has been slow to evolve. But now that there is this emergence of young engineers that grew up in the computer/internet era, there is a much desired change to the field.

In the next five years we will see this change taking shape with the advancement of new and innovative ways to look at engineering. Leading the way is Engineering Express with its developement of user friendly web calculators. These tools are designed to make it possible for anyone to perform a calculation that years ago had to be performed by an engineering, or at least someone good at math.
